The Challenge
ESSCA is a 100+ year old business school in France, with 8 campuses across Europe and Asia, and more than 7000 students. In a bid to attract new students, from all over the world, ESSCA launched a new project: the ESSCA Online Campus, offering 100% online courses ranging from short programmes to full degree programmes.
The Online Campus team had a clear vision of what they wanted to achieve. They wanted to move forward into the digital learning space without feeling influenced by ESSCA’s expansive face-toface learning history.
Therefore, they faced a challenge in creating something brand new, from scratch, that would enable ESSCA teachers to create brand new online courses, and support digital learning journeys.
Key Findings
Canvas has made it easy for ESSCA professors to build dedicated online teaching strategies, moving away from temporary practices developed during COVID-19.
Implementing Canvas has resulted in better, stronger, and more positive online education experiences for both teachers and students at the ESSCA business school.
Canvas has made it easy for ESSCA to unite parts of the student journey, using integrations such as PayPal to allow students to do everything through one interface.
The flexibility that’s built in within the Canvas ecosystem has empowered ESSCA professors to use the tools in their own unique ways to develop personalised learning.
Canvas has allowed ESSCA Online Campus to rapidly build an entire digital learning platform from scratch, taking less than 6 months to fully implement.
The Decision
While a system was already in place to support learning within ESSCA’s face-to-face teaching environment, Dr Orsolya Sadik-Rozsnyai, Professor of Marketing and Innovation, was keen to use Canvas when launching the new online campus.
Dr Sadik-Rozsnyai had been responsible for developing ESSCA’s award-winning massive open online course (MOOC), Creative Box, with help from Canvas. Having already seen first hand the multiple benefits that the system could bring to online learning, Canvas was the first and most natural choice for this new venture.
Canvas was agreed upon due to its ease of use. With ESSCA professors facing two significant changes simultaneously - the need to create new online courses and learn how to use a new system - Canvas’ intuitive nature was a huge advantage.
We know Canvas, it’s really user-friendly for both students and professors, and it just works. We were even using it during the pandemic, and we never had any problems. So we decided to look to the Canvas ecosystem for a comprehensive solution; one system to support online students right through from start to finish.

Director of ESSCA Online Campus
The Results
To achieve their goal of bringing together all aspects of the digital learner journey, ESSCA decided to utilise the full Canvas ecosystem, implementing Canvas itself along with Canvas Catalog and Canvas Studio.
Today, the online campus is using all three together to facilitate everything from enrollments to payments and more.
One of the most notable outcomes for ESSCA has been the high adoption rate from professors, who find Canvas to be easy to use, simple to understand, and easy to navigate.
Even though, for many teachers, it was their first time creating online courses, the results driven by using Canvas have been exceptional for the team.
