Canvas LMS and Canvas Catalog, a course catalog system, enables the New Mexico Public Education Department to provide meaningful professional learning at scale and help teachers become the most effective and impactful educators possible.

Since NMPED already utilize Canvas LMS and Canvas Catalog as integrated products for professional learning opportunities, teacher license advancement became the next logical step in their Canvas journey.

NMPED had previously used dossiers for teacher license advancement and replaced them with micro-credentials as part of a competency-based process. By “stacking” a series of Canvas courses focused on a skill set or aligned with a domain of Elevate New Mexico—the NMPED's educator effectiveness program—a micro-credential can be earned once mastery (85% or higher) is achieved. The program, Advancement Program Level for Level I - II (APLI-II), is made up of five micro-credential courses: Classroom Environment, Multi-Layered Systems of Support, Assessment Literacy, Culturally Linguistically Responsive Instruction, and Family Engagement.

The Level I MCs are completed during a quarter (12 weeks). When all of the micro-credentials are taken in succession, the program will take over a year to complete. NMPED plans on implementing Canvas Credentials to easily track participants’ micro course completion and to aid educators with sharing them through their Canvas Badges Backpack.

To streamline the enrollment process, educators filled out an online ‘Intent to Enroll’ form to help screen applicants, collect accurate contact information and have them fully acknowledge that they understand the program’s expectations. They were then sent a link to enroll through Canvas Catalog, and Canvas course sections were created to make the cohort sizes manageable for facilitators.

The NMPED used the payment option in Canvas Catalog to provide an affordable way for teachers to level up their advancement after they completed all requirements. Canvas Catalog’s reports and analytics support the program’s goals, payment reconciliation, and additional support.

With over 1,300 participants in its inaugural year, APLI-II will continue to grow with the addition of APLII-III and APLI for librarians launching next school year. Educators will have the option to select "elective" courses, which will be created via Canvas Credentials Pathways.
