Angela Duckworth and Grit Lab 101
One of the things that is really exciting about education right now, is that we realize that we need a more holistic, broader view of the capabilities of a student and all the things that they are supposed to be learning in education. GRIT love 101 is an interactive class where students in high school learn about the science of passion of perseverance for long term goals. The other half is to apply it in your everyday life. To make those insights actually help you figure out what it is that you're interested in, how you can get engaged, how you can learn to ask for feedback. To really discover what it is that you really care about and then to pursue it with everything you have. Angela's class and Angela, herself, gave me direction.
She's just such a welcoming person and she really does care about all her students and she wants the best from everyone. And I think, especially during these times, during the pandemic, where there's just so much uncertainty, a lot of high-schoolers just feel lost. It's like such a special age where you figure out, am I going to go to college? Where am I going to go to college? What am I going to do when I'm there? And so our mission is to give students all of Angela's knowledge and research on grit to help them be able to understand themselves better and be able to pursue their own goals better. One of the challenges that any instructor, any teacher, has to face is, how do I efficiently and elegantly communicate with my students? That is what Canvas allows me to do as a college professor, and it's exactly what Canvas is allowing me to do now, interacting with these high school students all over the country. Canvas is a great tool, because it really makes classes dynamic.
Students have one level of access, teachers have a different level of access. But at the same time, everyone is integrated in the same platform in a very straightforward and cohesive way. The mission of Instructure to amplify teaching and to elevate learning is my mission too and it's absolutely the heart of this project. I want to amplify teaching. I want to teach in a way that is better than I've done before. People have so much potential and if I can help unleash some of it, I think that will be a life well-lived.
