Canvas Certified Educator Program: From My Eyes

Hi, welcome to instructurecon. My name is John Wall. Guarantee. And today, we are going to be Oxhorn. Sorry we're going to be raining out are presenting on the canvas certified educator program. We call it from my eyes and base.
Their presentation is about the educator program, from my perspective, from Aaron's perspective. And then we will also be sharing some other a certified Educators thoughts and ideas on the program. So I got time tomorrow off and I am a canvas certified educator. I'm also a campus certified educator program still Tater and I'm an instructor advocate. And we're lucky to have you.
Jim Jim is. What is that data? Joanne. And now we're lucky to have him as one of our great facilitators. So is he at in structure? And I also am very privileged to be the coordinator of the canvasser. She, she text back and she is just like, the, the best leader you can have because she needs you.
And she, she always takes care of us. Love you. The program history. So this is an educator PD. It is, it is a really amazing, a professional development series off for canvas and it was a labor of love for your.
I turn over five years, but I was an English teacher before that and an administrator for 18 years before I start as a trainer here. And one of the things that I started talking about right away to my manager was, you know, we can be really great pdcourses. And, and it was something I really love doing about my in my other, in my roll, previous to come in or so. We built computer courses at like it says they're about three years ago. We did it.
We did a beta of them and then at 4 instructurecon 29 in the learning Safari that was in California. We partnered with digital promise to take some of their content that they had and turn it into live courses that we presented during the freak on there. And from there we discussed of all. So out of those courses, the whole, the whole camera certified educator program. So there are four courses that will talk about in a minute and then some like to learn Fox.
He's also he's one of my amazing. Appears you're on the on the team and learning Services team. She and I worked on on building. The course, the course is she was great about pulling all of the content together and we together built-in canvas and we're in the beta. I just about a year ago and kicked off campus certified educator for real.
We had we announced it around this time last year and thought well, we'll see what happens. If you don't know who's going to sign up and it went live on November 9th of 2020. And it is been amazing ever since. So. here, here is This is an overview of the courses.
So for Care, One Whit, will we have core15 Deschanel Frameworks core to engagement strategies core Core for at transformational practices, with digital tools and then you have to elective courses. These are really, really amazing. You have. Let's see. We have three tracks, correct.
There are three types of K-12 and three tracks for higher red. So yeah. True of the tracks are in common for K-12 and higher ed. And then we have a specific to the K-12 and Wednesday to go into. Yeah, but they were all the same and I'm sick of courses.
Do you build on each other? And yeah, they do that Lee scaffold relief. We have spent a few days. Interviewing, Kevin certified. Educators people who've who've completed the course, and it's one of the many themes that we are. Hearing is how well everything scaffolds up.
When I ask people what their favorite course was the majority of people say, I can't really tell you that anything. Was that a specific course? Is my favorite because they all built on top of each other and scaffold and so well. Pictures with good reason because it get does it scaffolds really well? And it it everything. Just just build to make you this this more of this better digital teacher if you. Well.
I mean, it's it's it's not just about canvas. It's about how to really leverage the platform and how to use it using best practices and make you for engaging for your students. So what about the program structure? Like we just showed you that there are four core courses and two electives and that together equals your educator in achieving your CCE. The core courses. Everyone takes those.
And then each electric elective crack again, like we said, earlier, has two courses and then recertification. In future years is just picking a new elective track. So, whatever you haven't taken before you take vacations, good for 2 years. And so we don't have anybody is ready to recertify yet. Cuz we just had our first group of people who actually were certified the summer.
But when it does come around, we'll have all the extra tracks. You have now, plus we're hoping to have more. So there will be, we will continue to produce content. So that there are there are more options for folks, but they won't have over again. It just will pick a new track.
So just two electives to recertify So again, these are the courses foundational Frameworks. So in this one, participants explore the impact of technology on student learning and how canvas can help Educators improve student achievement, motivation engagement. This is really amazing because you start to use technology, models to technology Frameworks like stammered, TPAC, Tim in Bloom's, taxonomy, and you really get to assess what you're doing. Currently in canvas and say, hey, I am. Am I just substituting everything in my program or or am I really trying to get to those higher levels for my students.
Do you want? We want to make sure everyone has that, that seem Baseline knowledge. We we could assume that everyone knows one or all of those framework Soul Eastbound in in delivery. And of course, it's true, you know, not everyone. Most Educators, no blooms inside and out, but not everyone is even familiar with a framework like Sam or right, or TPAC work. And there's other ones that we explore in in the higher ed.
There's pick rat. And, you know, there's all these other ones that we bring in Baseline of at least the samurai foundation and have Samara and blooms can correlate and go from there and let people then select a framework. They want to engage. Or one that makes sense were for their own, whatever they're doing and education. And I think we set the tone in that course of providing information and wedding, you then select where you want to go.
And I, and I hope that that's always felt throughout the entire series that We got all that you have a choice as a as a learner for how it applies to you and whatever your role is. and in the really nice thing about that choice that's provided in your is When when you receive that through the through the professional development, you start to see how you can apply that to your students. Or if you doing professional development for your District or for University. You see how that applies to your adult Learners to. It's it's, it's really kind of you have this Epiphany.
Like, oh my gosh, what they're showing me is something I can take and I can really use not just what I'm being presented with but how it's being presented to me. So that's the last couple of days. I know that's come out for me and if people have said no matter what role they are in, right? Because we have people who are classroom, teachers are people who are, you know, professors and instructional designers in, in higher ed. And no matter what their role is, they found a place in in the program and they were able to apply it to Because of that choice because of the freedom, they have to design kind of what the their project is. They've all put it to use in their day today.
I didn't hear anyone say, well, I just going through the motions. Are you going to build something? Is that piece that you turn in? It's going to be something you can use. You definitely can't just go through the motions. It is not designed that way. It is not for people who just want to, you know, I just you know, yeah, I'm just going to put time and I I've heard people in the interviews we've been doing.
So, you know, this is graduate-level stop by people like you. I felt like I should have been, you know, this should have been my help me with my recertification for my teacher. This is, this is what I should get for the next 5-10 years. I should be. It's a really, it's the whole thing is engagement strategies.
And here we examine the waist of canvas could help enrich. Our teaching practices. It it's it's really not just an LMS. It is so much more. And what we do in the classroom is Teachers.
We talked about the impact of a long-term academic success of our students and do this week, you know, there are strategies to enhance engagement motivate our Learners and pretty progression towards learning goals. You really, really do optimize your your impact on student achievement in this course. It's really, really amazing. Uncomfortable, and I'll explain why. Did each one of the courses are lines to a digital promised.
My credential in the one that this one is aligned to you is teaching protocols. And so folks can pick from a variety of teaching protocols that they wanted dig into further in the course, but the application in this course, is designed as a giant asynchronous jig saw. And so, It kind of freaks people out because it's not your typical learning experience. And I don't think most people can say. Oh, yes, of course.
I've participated in a giant asynchronous jigsaw before So it's that with playlist and even though K-12 Educators, probably have a lot of knowledge about higher-ed, might not, and even if they have asked the students to participate with the playlist. They probably haven't had the opportunity to do it themselves. And so, I think this course, kind of way outside of their comfort zone, but then they come back and see, like, oh, but I didn't gave the entire time. I was learning about what I wanted to learn about. You know, I was exploring what I wanted to do and I create something really great.
So even though it's kind of pushes the boundaries. Yeah, you know, it really again, it's what you're doing in the course. Way is as a participant in the course. If you is you start to look around your like again. These are strategies that I can I can use in in my own courses.
In my own canvas courses end in. These are going to be great for whether I have adult Learners or whether I have, you do professional students, I can use this and I know what it looks like and what it feels like because I just went through it. This is like immersive. Something that you're also learning about had a created and Europe, have participant the same time free. We learned about personalized learning.
And one of the things that, that was really great about this. I think everyone in my, in my cohort. It's for going through and were were able to select different different topics in different areas that we want to explore every play. Hey, there allowed us to personalize our learning in this personalized. Learning course.
We were all just really like that's really not awful. That's really cool. It was so interesting from from that initial group. That went through. Well, I didn't just look at 1.
I didn't want to miss out on the other other things that were presented. So they found that they did. They did even more than was required of them. And they were like when you were like, yeah, that's kind of the point. That's, that's awesome.
That's exactly what we wanted you to be active participants in the morning. That's scary to work for teachers to give that over sometimes to say. Well, I'm going to create this. I'm going to put it out there and I'm going to let the students Tech. It's freeing at the it's freeing an awesome.
Right? Because you do pick the thing. They really want to learn more about, so, professional development where it's like, I'm going to give you all these different groups has to look at. And you got to choose how much, or how little you you do? And again, it's the same thing people like I'm going to save the rest of these and I'm going to come back because these all have value. Yeah. Yeah, it's hard to pick.
It really is. And then it's funny because when you read when you read their deliverable, you can see that they've read everything or have watched all the videos. other things in there, even though they didn't have to, Don't want to miss out on anything they want. Got so yeah, it really was of core 4 is transformational practices and this in court for you get to evaluate and learn about a bunch of digital learning tools. That can actually be used in conjunction with canvas whether they're LT eyes or the tool that Reader X.
It's really cool because we we like crowdsource all the different Technologies, everyone uses. And then we talked about how they promote the four C's, communication Corporation critical thinking and creativity. Not only do you, do you take a look at that? These different digital tools? You also take a look at pay our. Am I meeting the Force is with us? And if and if I'm not, is there something else I can use? That would help me meet the four seats. One of the essential questions of the program is am I using technology just for technology steak.
And so I think, when you look at transformational practices with digital learning tools, you really can do that reflected, peace and say, Do I need that? Or am I just throwing it in there? Cuz it's fun and has bells, and whistles worry? Or, you know, ask that question of, which one of those things that fall into or for the four C's? And yeah, we we make it. We crowdsource pretty sweet list and then there's a database that we've created based on when everybody has come up with for, for their digital learning tools. And that's that's a really nice benefit. I think for all the courses to that. We've got this, you know, group brain project that the church in the database that we created and see what digital tool.
There isn't then, there's even a video that one of the classmates made about it, you know, someone in the program has made about it that you can take a look at. So And it's a great way to to wrap up the the all four cores with transmission practices because you really get to create a project where you going to choose, the tools are going to use essential oils and then apply all the best practices and in all the pedagogical ideology that you've learned from core one, all the way through what you, what you've done. And in a lot of times people start to see, wow. I've actually been doing some of these things. I've actually been personalizing learning for my students, but but they didn't understand the full scope of personalization.
They didn't understand. You know, this that they were in in some instances in the higher levels of stammer in higher levels of Bloom in using different Technologies. And in not just for Technology's sake. So you come to this the self-realization I guess of your practice and it is it is very empowering. Sorry, I just can't speak.
Highly. I love it. So through that there's Mastery evidence and you get your canvas badge. Now you get a badge for each. Core member and for each of your elective courses, which is really cool because you can just throw them in your email down.
Underneath your signature has lately that are like this long with all the different badges never. It's really awesome to see them or just digital stickers, but they're digital stickers of achievement. Badger with our Partnerships, you Badger those those badges. And so if you shared them that you have the metadata in there, so I know a lot of folks, her, you know, and sending them to their their directors or their bosses and they're putting them in LinkedIn and Twitter and they're showing off like, hey, I learned that stuff. I know this, but it's, it's a really great feeling that the badges and complete and then know that you completed something that I pretty much most people are talk to their taking, what they've built, an end, reusing it because it's, you know, it's not just like, we have them build something, and then it's done.
It's real time, putting it into action and using it at and sharing it. A lot of times. It's a lot of sharing in the courses. That's why That you know that horses are a synchronous. But there's a lot of discussion boards in there and and sharing.
And peer review is big part of it. Be back and cuz you learn just as much from others. As you do from yourself, you're an experienced to the courses from other parts of the country other districts, and in some instances other parts of the world, you just extend your your personalized learning or your personal learning learning net worth. We talked about digital promise the it. it says, my credentials for book K-12 and higher ed in partnership So is free of charge for any of our participants to might decide that they want to add on that, additional my her credentials for the work that they've done inside of the chemist.
So what to expect? So the course flow. So modules are structured by weeks. There's one module per week and there are four modules. That the course is do go for 6 weeks because it's so you have that extra time specially when you get into the fourth week in the fourth module. People really want to put additional time into those final projects and end because what we're finding is that people really want to do a great job, really want to wrap things up, and put a nice, big bow on it.
So they're giving those additional two weeks at the end so they can just have that bill up really, really perfectly. Yeah, and and we, Is only due date for the first 4 weeks. And then there's those two weeks on me and then that, you know, what, for life, because life has been busy and and you know, there's all kinds of stuff that can happen. And so the courses don't truly and after 6 weeks either like we have we have lots of folks to we're going to work with you if you if you want to participate, give extensions. So yeah, and then he sweet uses.
That hand amount to let you see there. And I don't know about you Jim, but in a lot of my interviews, people reference the panda Model A lot and in what that is really is just a module structure that is consistent across every one of the courses and said there's three pages. Prepare. Activate a navigate and after we give like the content for 4 whether, you know, we set goals, but they're going to learn and demonstrating articulate our to where he's been making show off what they learned. So that demonstrate is usually an assignment and articulate is usually a discussion, but I heard over and over and over again from school teacher or Professor.
Oh, I use the panda bottle and my students love. It's perfect. So yeah, that's one of the things that sucks at Sea in the, in the courses because the panda is the canvas spirit animal. Everybody. Panda is our unofficial mascot added structure.
So we got permission to use the panda or not. Everyone can. It's a very, it's only using certain in certain instances at in structure, but we were allowed to use it. So it worked out really well. So, regretting scheme.
Weeks 1 through 4 discussions weeks 1 through 3 assignment. Everyone gets me back and, you know, Jim as a as a facilitator, how important that we didn't want to. So we're kind of like a nun grading kind of experiment here. They're complete and complete. The only one that has any points built into.
It is the final assignment and truthfully. That's so we can award the badge. So otherwise, you know, it's you know what to expect? Because there's a rubrecht, just completed complete reset, at any time. And it's just that final assignment, that everything is really building up to, and that's final assignment is, will decide whether or not the badges awarded. That is how the grading is set up.
And then here are the two programs side-by-side hieratic Everything is from 1 through 5 quarts 1 through 4. It's very similar. It's it's the. And then it's when you break into your elective courses, that things change of quite a bit more for you. But you folks will see you you know, and branding and in the design of the course is to is is meant to be that everyone should you don't feel comfortable with what they're seeing that, and icons that they see throughout use.
That was a big part of the course. So should I have Candice experience first air? Well, we're not really going to teach you how to use canvas and canvas certified educator. We're not going to teach how to push the buttons to make the thing. So would you agree with that? But absolutely, this is not a a nuts-and-bolts of canvas program. This is this is way beyond that experience.
Canvas, you are in in the program, but it's really kind of had to apply canvas to your teaching and learning the basics of how to create a course in. So, you know, that's where the the training team has built some, some awesome stuff all the stuff. And there's also a canvas Basics course that you can take in the canvas Network that they built this summer and we do encourage folks, if they are little bit shaky with no canvas that they could bake a cake. For to feel more comfortable in in this program could help you out. If you if you're not feeling, you know, a hundred percent with with your knowledge, right? What, where are you now? As we have a little sex section called, what do the canvas certified educator say? So some of those people that we interviewed, not all them because we're going to be using some of those videos later and I don't like delivering those individually.
We went to certified Educators to see what they had to say about the program. Is it ever going to hear from Steve Hartman? The director of digital teaching, and learning at Elizabeth forward, School, District in Pennsylvania? I think when he first here, like certified educator program and other tech companies that do something similar. You don't, I mean, like apple has the Apple teacher program. We will have to do to write all those things in those. Those are great in their own regard, right? Because they help train you on specific features and functions of, that's right.
And that's what I kind of expected it to be. Okay. I'll get a nice refresher on how to do, you know Pages, how to set up my courses in Morocco's. Maybe there'll be something for me as an administrator. Maybe I'll learn Advanced features like that would like mash with us.
Maybe I'll throw in studio in there or whatever. But boy was I wrong about that, right? And we kind of like, what I said, previously was, there's so much more to it, you know, in terms of looking at you no gray best practices in canvas, but also pedagogy looking at different things, like stammer and tea pack, and all those different things looking at personalized learning and engagement strategies as well. And I loved about the course was it's all back and research, right? And it's really important to to myself and the people that I work with knowing that I'm getting them, good information. You know what I mean? I'm not just doing something. I can't.
You guess what? This is really good and it's why we're going to use it cuz I found an article on Google. You know what I mean? This was something that when I'm Brett read through the program in your reading, the assigned readings and stuff to engage with your, you feel good about that. And so, you know, beginning the chorus or before I began a course, I thought to myself, like, okay. This will be like a, you know, a canvas 101 or something and it was built off of that. But like I said before, I was definitely wrong about that.
It's so much more you really get to explore how and it is interesting, how canvas. And like I said, I had to go to the different practices, all kind of merge. Those are some really wonderful things Steve had to say about the program Everest schools. In Wisconsin. Wanted to be a part of the beta, the CC beta program and I'll be honest.
I thought it would just be a program that was about teaching us more about Camp. That's right. Like, here's how you can start to hear some other things to do at discussion. Some things like that and I could not have been more off and that expectation right give to this program is that it's about so much more than that. It's about hardcore at the like or of this program is best practice and Powerful teaching, right? Until like That's, that's the biggest thing that I walked away from his like, using a blended learning, whether your face away is whether you're so virtual right or your kind of, in and out.
It's, it's really about what's best practice for Distributing that digital content as well as just teaching practice for is also a certified educator. And so there's only two of us to integration specialist that our district in. So that's been super, you know, beneficial to what we do that. We both have been to the program, but since I was in the pilot and she was one class behind me to be like, okay, tell me about that. Personalized, learning plastic, what you think I was like, oh my God, that was the best class yet.
Everyone just kept jumping, the other class, like, I walked away from every one of those horses thinking. Like, oh my gosh. This is impacted what I do on the daily basis, like it is completely change. The way support teachers it is completely changed my conversations about teaching and learning with canvas. It has completely changed the way that we plan and deliver our professional development.
That's really awesome to hear from us any on how she's using what she learned in the can of certified educator program. Yes, so next up. We have Sue's and mehs PE teacher and canvas administrator for Bristol. Township School District of Pennsylvania is what the student have to say. It was, it was really cool to be able to do the assignments because I was able to translate them into classes.
So I would plan, things are things that I've already and I was like, all I can change this and I can, I can make this different end, just the different ways. I mean, the first the first course is all about Samer and how to use a technology not for just technology, safe, but to use it in, in your classroom, to help students in all different ways, and it was really cool to jump into that. And then I recently, just started a driver's ed program at our school. It's like, okay, we can kind of make me. I can use these modules and requirements to master a pass for students who are taking driver's ed and be able to kind of give them other ways to do things cuz not everybody likes the same way obviously, so as I work through, I was taking things that I was currently doing and changing them and I'm being like, okay, how can I make this better? And my first, real experience with masterpass was in the the program? Gummy more wonderful things said about the program.

We have the Corral for kids because it's weird to have an orientation course that you goes to throughout the year. And that's where our students and parents, get all the information and it's secure because you have to login. We don't need things being like weird on the website.
So we keep our website, just very clean and open to the public. But then we have this 10 separate part that's very personal and keeps them connected to us. And then we have the Hub, which is worse staff. So we no longer do you like an actual staff binder, with all the paper and all those things? The really great thing is because as we have made, some things are links to live Google Docs. So when we used to have to send out like 15 emails, that said, security updated lunch list.
Here's the updated whatever. And that's all in the Hub Bar staff and it's secure and it's updated and you don't have to die in your Google folder and a lot that was really refined because they are good ideas. Who's the associate professor of mass communication at Murray State University? I think the one big takeaway that I had in all of this and it just could be for something for somebody who maybe it was on the fence about whether to do this. I had some good ideas that I wanted to do and canvas but didn't maybe know how to set it up or just wasn't thinking it through. So going through this program, helped me to get those things done. So for instance, there was an especially in that one course where you're really working more with some of the external Technologies. Wear.
One of those that I had chosen was voice thread and at that same time. I was also working on my voice thread educator, project assignment for my students that they really enjoyed. I think the one big and that's that's all we have for you directly from Arkansas, certified educators. Steve would like more information on the program. And see the courses you when they're being offered, you typically offer them every 6 weeks.
So our next start is going to be October 25th. I take a little bit of a break over the holiday period starting in January, but the catalog would be a good place to start. If you're going to see if you're going to purchase them individually. The other thing you can do is contact your customer success manager or your salesperson, especially if you're interested in, maybe having multiple people from your institution, go to the program together. We have we have full cohorts, full sections of people from from colleges or from school districts who are going through it together and it's going to be the basis for some awesome stuff at their institutions.

So just two electives to recertify So again, these are the courses foundational Frameworks. So in this one, participants explore the impact of technology on student learning and how canvas can help Educators improve student achievement, motivation engagement. This is really amazing because you start to use technology, models to technology Frameworks like stammered, TPAC, Tim in Bloom's, taxonomy, and you really get to assess what you're doing. Currently in canvas and say, hey, I am. Am I just substituting everything in my program or or am I really trying to get to those higher levels for my students.
Do you want? We want to make sure everyone has that, that seem Baseline knowledge. We we could assume that everyone knows one or all of those framework Soul Eastbound in in delivery. And of course, it's true, you know, not everyone. Most Educators, no blooms inside and out, but not everyone is even familiar with a framework like Sam or right, or TPAC work. And there's other ones that we explore in in the higher ed.
There's pick rat. And, you know, there's all these other ones that we bring in Baseline of at least the samurai foundation and have Samara and blooms can correlate and go from there and let people then select a framework. They want to engage. Or one that makes sense were for their own, whatever they're doing and education. And I think we set the tone in that course of providing information and wedding, you then select where you want to go.
And I, and I hope that that's always felt throughout the entire series that We got all that you have a choice as a as a learner for how it applies to you and whatever your role is. and in the really nice thing about that choice that's provided in your is When when you receive that through the through the professional development, you start to see how you can apply that to your students. Or if you doing professional development for your District or for University. You see how that applies to your adult Learners to. It's it's, it's really kind of you have this Epiphany.
Like, oh my gosh, what they're showing me is something I can take and I can really use not just what I'm being presented with but how it's being presented to me. So that's the last couple of days. I know that's come out for me and if people have said no matter what role they are in, right? Because we have people who are classroom, teachers are people who are, you know, professors and instructional designers in, in higher ed. And no matter what their role is, they found a place in in the program and they were able to apply it to Because of that choice because of the freedom, they have to design kind of what the their project is. They've all put it to use in their day today.
I didn't hear anyone say, well, I just going through the motions. Are you going to build something? Is that piece that you turn in? It's going to be something you can use. You definitely can't just go through the motions. It is not designed that way. It is not for people who just want to, you know, I just you know, yeah, I'm just going to put time and I I've heard people in the interviews we've been doing.
So, you know, this is graduate-level stop by people like you. I felt like I should have been, you know, this should have been my help me with my recertification for my teacher. This is, this is what I should get for the next 5-10 years. I should be. It's a really, it's the whole thing is engagement strategies.
And here we examine the waist of canvas could help enrich. Our teaching practices. It it's it's really not just an LMS. It is so much more. And what we do in the classroom is Teachers.
We talked about the impact of a long-term academic success of our students and do this week, you know, there are strategies to enhance engagement motivate our Learners and pretty progression towards learning goals. You really, really do optimize your your impact on student achievement in this course. It's really, really amazing. Uncomfortable, and I'll explain why. Did each one of the courses are lines to a digital promised.
My credential in the one that this one is aligned to you is teaching protocols. And so folks can pick from a variety of teaching protocols that they wanted dig into further in the course, but the application in this course, is designed as a giant asynchronous jig saw. And so, It kind of freaks people out because it's not your typical learning experience. And I don't think most people can say. Oh, yes, of course.
I've participated in a giant asynchronous jigsaw before So it's that with playlist and even though K-12 Educators, probably have a lot of knowledge about higher-ed, might not, and even if they have asked the students to participate with the playlist. They probably haven't had the opportunity to do it themselves. And so, I think this course, kind of way outside of their comfort zone, but then they come back and see, like, oh, but I didn't gave the entire time. I was learning about what I wanted to learn about. You know, I was exploring what I wanted to do and I create something really great.
So even though it's kind of pushes the boundaries. Yeah, you know, it really again, it's what you're doing in the course. Way is as a participant in the course. If you is you start to look around your like again. These are strategies that I can I can use in in my own courses.
In my own canvas courses end in. These are going to be great for whether I have adult Learners or whether I have, you do professional students, I can use this and I know what it looks like and what it feels like because I just went through it. This is like immersive. Something that you're also learning about had a created and Europe, have participant the same time free. We learned about personalized learning.
And one of the things that, that was really great about this. I think everyone in my, in my cohort. It's for going through and were were able to select different different topics in different areas that we want to explore every play. Hey, there allowed us to personalize our learning in this personalized. Learning course.
We were all just really like that's really not awful. That's really cool. It was so interesting from from that initial group. That went through. Well, I didn't just look at 1.
I didn't want to miss out on the other other things that were presented. So they found that they did. They did even more than was required of them. And they were like when you were like, yeah, that's kind of the point. That's, that's awesome.
That's exactly what we wanted you to be active participants in the morning. That's scary to work for teachers to give that over sometimes to say. Well, I'm going to create this. I'm going to put it out there and I'm going to let the students Tech. It's freeing at the it's freeing an awesome.
Right? Because you do pick the thing. They really want to learn more about, so, professional development where it's like, I'm going to give you all these different groups has to look at. And you got to choose how much, or how little you you do? And again, it's the same thing people like I'm going to save the rest of these and I'm going to come back because these all have value. Yeah. Yeah, it's hard to pick.
It really is. And then it's funny because when you read when you read their deliverable, you can see that they've read everything or have watched all the videos. other things in there, even though they didn't have to, Don't want to miss out on anything they want. Got so yeah, it really was of core 4 is transformational practices and this in court for you get to evaluate and learn about a bunch of digital learning tools. That can actually be used in conjunction with canvas whether they're LT eyes or the tool that Reader X.
It's really cool because we we like crowdsource all the different Technologies, everyone uses. And then we talked about how they promote the four C's, communication Corporation critical thinking and creativity. Not only do you, do you take a look at that? These different digital tools? You also take a look at pay our. Am I meeting the Force is with us? And if and if I'm not, is there something else I can use? That would help me meet the four seats. One of the essential questions of the program is am I using technology just for technology steak.
And so I think, when you look at transformational practices with digital learning tools, you really can do that reflected, peace and say, Do I need that? Or am I just throwing it in there? Cuz it's fun and has bells, and whistles worry? Or, you know, ask that question of, which one of those things that fall into or for the four C's? And yeah, we we make it. We crowdsource pretty sweet list and then there's a database that we've created based on when everybody has come up with for, for their digital learning tools. And that's that's a really nice benefit. I think for all the courses to that. We've got this, you know, group brain project that the church in the database that we created and see what digital tool.
There isn't then, there's even a video that one of the classmates made about it, you know, someone in the program has made about it that you can take a look at. So And it's a great way to to wrap up the the all four cores with transmission practices because you really get to create a project where you going to choose, the tools are going to use essential oils and then apply all the best practices and in all the pedagogical ideology that you've learned from core one, all the way through what you, what you've done. And in a lot of times people start to see, wow. I've actually been doing some of these things. I've actually been personalizing learning for my students, but but they didn't understand the full scope of personalization.
They didn't understand. You know, this that they were in in some instances in the higher levels of stammer in higher levels of Bloom in using different Technologies. And in not just for Technology's sake. So you come to this the self-realization I guess of your practice and it is it is very empowering. Sorry, I just can't speak.
Highly. I love it. So through that there's Mastery evidence and you get your canvas badge. Now you get a badge for each. Core member and for each of your elective courses, which is really cool because you can just throw them in your email down.
Underneath your signature has lately that are like this long with all the different badges never. It's really awesome to see them or just digital stickers, but they're digital stickers of achievement. Badger with our Partnerships, you Badger those those badges. And so if you shared them that you have the metadata in there, so I know a lot of folks, her, you know, and sending them to their their directors or their bosses and they're putting them in LinkedIn and Twitter and they're showing off like, hey, I learned that stuff. I know this, but it's, it's a really great feeling that the badges and complete and then know that you completed something that I pretty much most people are talk to their taking, what they've built, an end, reusing it because it's, you know, it's not just like, we have them build something, and then it's done.
It's real time, putting it into action and using it at and sharing it. A lot of times. It's a lot of sharing in the courses. That's why That you know that horses are a synchronous. But there's a lot of discussion boards in there and and sharing.
And peer review is big part of it. Be back and cuz you learn just as much from others. As you do from yourself, you're an experienced to the courses from other parts of the country other districts, and in some instances other parts of the world, you just extend your your personalized learning or your personal learning learning net worth. We talked about digital promise the it. it says, my credentials for book K-12 and higher ed in partnership So is free of charge for any of our participants to might decide that they want to add on that, additional my her credentials for the work that they've done inside of the chemist.
So what to expect? So the course flow. So modules are structured by weeks. There's one module per week and there are four modules. That the course is do go for 6 weeks because it's so you have that extra time specially when you get into the fourth week in the fourth module. People really want to put additional time into those final projects and end because what we're finding is that people really want to do a great job, really want to wrap things up, and put a nice, big bow on it.
So they're giving those additional two weeks at the end so they can just have that bill up really, really perfectly. Yeah, and and we, Is only due date for the first 4 weeks. And then there's those two weeks on me and then that, you know, what, for life, because life has been busy and and you know, there's all kinds of stuff that can happen. And so the courses don't truly and after 6 weeks either like we have we have lots of folks to we're going to work with you if you if you want to participate, give extensions. So yeah, and then he sweet uses.
That hand amount to let you see there. And I don't know about you Jim, but in a lot of my interviews, people reference the panda Model A lot and in what that is really is just a module structure that is consistent across every one of the courses and said there's three pages. Prepare. Activate a navigate and after we give like the content for 4 whether, you know, we set goals, but they're going to learn and demonstrating articulate our to where he's been making show off what they learned. So that demonstrate is usually an assignment and articulate is usually a discussion, but I heard over and over and over again from school teacher or Professor.
Oh, I use the panda bottle and my students love. It's perfect. So yeah, that's one of the things that sucks at Sea in the, in the courses because the panda is the canvas spirit animal. Everybody. Panda is our unofficial mascot added structure.
So we got permission to use the panda or not. Everyone can. It's a very, it's only using certain in certain instances at in structure, but we were allowed to use it. So it worked out really well. So, regretting scheme.
Weeks 1 through 4 discussions weeks 1 through 3 assignment. Everyone gets me back and, you know, Jim as a as a facilitator, how important that we didn't want to. So we're kind of like a nun grading kind of experiment here. They're complete and complete. The only one that has any points built into.
It is the final assignment and truthfully. That's so we can award the badge. So otherwise, you know, it's you know what to expect? Because there's a rubrecht, just completed complete reset, at any time. And it's just that final assignment, that everything is really building up to, and that's final assignment is, will decide whether or not the badges awarded. That is how the grading is set up.
And then here are the two programs side-by-side hieratic Everything is from 1 through 5 quarts 1 through 4. It's very similar. It's it's the. And then it's when you break into your elective courses, that things change of quite a bit more for you. But you folks will see you you know, and branding and in the design of the course is to is is meant to be that everyone should you don't feel comfortable with what they're seeing that, and icons that they see throughout use.
That was a big part of the course. So should I have Candice experience first air? Well, we're not really going to teach you how to use canvas and canvas certified educator. We're not going to teach how to push the buttons to make the thing. So would you agree with that? But absolutely, this is not a a nuts-and-bolts of canvas program. This is this is way beyond that experience.
Canvas, you are in in the program, but it's really kind of had to apply canvas to your teaching and learning the basics of how to create a course in. So, you know, that's where the the training team has built some, some awesome stuff all the stuff. And there's also a canvas Basics course that you can take in the canvas Network that they built this summer and we do encourage folks, if they are little bit shaky with no canvas that they could bake a cake. For to feel more comfortable in in this program could help you out. If you if you're not feeling, you know, a hundred percent with with your knowledge, right? What, where are you now? As we have a little sex section called, what do the canvas certified educator say? So some of those people that we interviewed, not all them because we're going to be using some of those videos later and I don't like delivering those individually.
We went to certified Educators to see what they had to say about the program. Is it ever going to hear from Steve Hartman? The director of digital teaching, and learning at Elizabeth forward, School, District in Pennsylvania? I think when he first here, like certified educator program and other tech companies that do something similar. You don't, I mean, like apple has the Apple teacher program. We will have to do to write all those things in those. Those are great in their own regard, right? Because they help train you on specific features and functions of, that's right.
And that's what I kind of expected it to be. Okay. I'll get a nice refresher on how to do, you know Pages, how to set up my courses in Morocco's. Maybe there'll be something for me as an administrator. Maybe I'll learn Advanced features like that would like mash with us.
Maybe I'll throw in studio in there or whatever. But boy was I wrong about that, right? And we kind of like, what I said, previously was, there's so much more to it, you know, in terms of looking at you no gray best practices in canvas, but also pedagogy looking at different things, like stammer and tea pack, and all those different things looking at personalized learning and engagement strategies as well. And I loved about the course was it's all back and research, right? And it's really important to to myself and the people that I work with knowing that I'm getting them, good information. You know what I mean? I'm not just doing something. I can't.
You guess what? This is really good and it's why we're going to use it cuz I found an article on Google. You know what I mean? This was something that when I'm Brett read through the program in your reading, the assigned readings and stuff to engage with your, you feel good about that. And so, you know, beginning the chorus or before I began a course, I thought to myself, like, okay. This will be like a, you know, a canvas 101 or something and it was built off of that. But like I said before, I was definitely wrong about that.
It's so much more you really get to explore how and it is interesting, how canvas. And like I said, I had to go to the different practices, all kind of merge. Those are some really wonderful things Steve had to say about the program Everest schools. In Wisconsin. Wanted to be a part of the beta, the CC beta program and I'll be honest.
I thought it would just be a program that was about teaching us more about Camp. That's right. Like, here's how you can start to hear some other things to do at discussion. Some things like that and I could not have been more off and that expectation right give to this program is that it's about so much more than that. It's about hardcore at the like or of this program is best practice and Powerful teaching, right? Until like That's, that's the biggest thing that I walked away from his like, using a blended learning, whether your face away is whether you're so virtual right or your kind of, in and out.
It's, it's really about what's best practice for Distributing that digital content as well as just teaching practice for is also a certified educator. And so there's only two of us to integration specialist that our district in. So that's been super, you know, beneficial to what we do that. We both have been to the program, but since I was in the pilot and she was one class behind me to be like, okay, tell me about that. Personalized, learning plastic, what you think I was like, oh my God, that was the best class yet.
Everyone just kept jumping, the other class, like, I walked away from every one of those horses thinking. Like, oh my gosh. This is impacted what I do on the daily basis, like it is completely change. The way support teachers it is completely changed my conversations about teaching and learning with canvas. It has completely changed the way that we plan and deliver our professional development.
That's really awesome to hear from us any on how she's using what she learned in the can of certified educator program. Yes, so next up. We have Sue's and mehs PE teacher and canvas administrator for Bristol. Township School District of Pennsylvania is what the student have to say. It was, it was really cool to be able to do the assignments because I was able to translate them into classes.
So I would plan, things are things that I've already and I was like, all I can change this and I can, I can make this different end, just the different ways. I mean, the first the first course is all about Samer and how to use a technology not for just technology, safe, but to use it in, in your classroom, to help students in all different ways, and it was really cool to jump into that. And then I recently, just started a driver's ed program at our school. It's like, okay, we can kind of make me. I can use these modules and requirements to master a pass for students who are taking driver's ed and be able to kind of give them other ways to do things cuz not everybody likes the same way obviously, so as I work through, I was taking things that I was currently doing and changing them and I'm being like, okay, how can I make this better? And my first, real experience with masterpass was in the the program? Gummy more wonderful things said about the program.

We have the Corral for kids because it's weird to have an orientation course that you goes to throughout the year. And that's where our students and parents, get all the information and it's secure because you have to login. We don't need things being like weird on the website.
So we keep our website, just very clean and open to the public. But then we have this 10 separate part that's very personal and keeps them connected to us. And then we have the Hub, which is worse staff. So we no longer do you like an actual staff binder, with all the paper and all those things? The really great thing is because as we have made, some things are links to live Google Docs. So when we used to have to send out like 15 emails, that said, security updated lunch list.
Here's the updated whatever. And that's all in the Hub Bar staff and it's secure and it's updated and you don't have to die in your Google folder and a lot that was really refined because they are good ideas. Who's the associate professor of mass communication at Murray State University? I think the one big takeaway that I had in all of this and it just could be for something for somebody who maybe it was on the fence about whether to do this. I had some good ideas that I wanted to do and canvas but didn't maybe know how to set it up or just wasn't thinking it through. So going through this program, helped me to get those things done. So for instance, there was an especially in that one course where you're really working more with some of the external Technologies. Wear.
One of those that I had chosen was voice thread and at that same time. I was also working on my voice thread educator, project assignment for my students that they really enjoyed. I think the one big and that's that's all we have for you directly from Arkansas, certified educators. Steve would like more information on the program. And see the courses you when they're being offered, you typically offer them every 6 weeks.
So our next start is going to be October 25th. I take a little bit of a break over the holiday period starting in January, but the catalog would be a good place to start. If you're going to see if you're going to purchase them individually. The other thing you can do is contact your customer success manager or your salesperson, especially if you're interested in, maybe having multiple people from your institution, go to the program together. We have we have full cohorts, full sections of people from from colleges or from school districts who are going through it together and it's going to be the basis for some awesome stuff at their institutions.
