Meet Matt McShane, the friendly face of Further Education. In this interview, Matt talks innovation in Further Ed, Topshop Shirts and his favourite TV series of all time...
Let’s start with a fun one - what’s your star sign (and do you believe in them)?
My star sign is Leo and no I don’t believe in them.
Classic Leo. What’s your favourite food?
Tricky, I am a seafood lover, however if it was one meal I would go for veal milanese.
Ok, let’s talk shop - what drew you to the EdTech space?
There is something uniquely fulfilling about working in education—an opportunity to make a direct and meaningful impact that I’ve not experienced in any other sector. As someone who came through the Further Education system myself, I understand both the challenges and the triumphs that define it. To now be in a position where I can contribute to its ongoing evolution is great. Nothing stays the same for long, which means I am constantly learning and developing.
Why do you think technology is important to education?
There are so many answers to this question I think. Fundamentally technology removes barriers—be it geographical, financial, or personal. Technology opens doors to opportunities that might otherwise remain closed. It allows for more inclusive, personalised learning experiences, enabling students to engage at their own pace and in ways that align with how they learn best.
But beyond accessibility, technology also invites creativity, collaboration, and innovation. It helps educators evolve their practice and respond more effectively to the changing needs of learners. In a world that is constantly shifting, technology provides the flexibility and adaptability that modern education demands.
What excites you about the current trends in EdTech?
We’re undoubtedly in the midst of a significant period of change. Within the tertiary sector, one of the most exciting shifts I’ve seen is the movement away from purely traditional models of education and toward a focus on lifelong learning. The rise of micro-credentials and their seamless integration into the learner journey signals a powerful opportunity—a chance to reshape education into something more flexible, inclusive, and truly reflective of the way people grow throughout their lives.
Talking of trends, if you could bring back any trend, what would it be?
Early 2010’s - when the style was multi-coloured Topman T-Shirts and mustard chinos.
And lastly, what are you currently binge-watching on TV?
I just finished Yellowstone - best series of all time.
That’s a wrap! If want to talk to Matt about anything, from Yellowstone to your EdTech stack - you can get in touch here. You can connect with Matt on LinkedIn here.
