We are very excited to announce the launch of a free course, available through the open Canvas Network

With funding from the NIH Big Data to Knowledge (BD2K) Initiative for Research Education, the Best Practices for Biomedical Research Data Management massive open online course (MOOC) provides training to librarians, biomedical researchers, undergraduate and graduate biomedical students, and other individuals interested on best practices for discoverability, access, integrity, reuse value, privacy, security, and long term preservation of biomedical research data.

This MOOC is built upon and expands the training materials of the New England Collaborative Data Management Curriculum (NECDMC), developed by several libraries in the New England region.

Power of Collaboration

This course is a collaboration between a variety of librarians, researchers and others to make a subject area available in an online platform. We present research data management and the principles behind it from multiple perspectives. We believe we have created content that is valuable to a variety of research professionals.

Power of Online Learning

One of the benefits of online education is the utilization of a variety of learning opportunities. This course offers not only lectures but also videos, interactive activities, case studies, readings and quizzes. By including these different mediums, we are able to reach different types of learners.

Power of Community

Our goals for this course include:

-Building a community of interdisciplinary learners who can apply knowledge gained from this course to their work in advancing scientific discovery and FAIR data principles.

-Providing curricular materials that are theoretical in nature and also practical to apply to professional work.

-Employing a sustainability plan for up-to-date content and increased relevance in the fast developing scientific world.

We want to emphasize that this course was not developed by one person, but through input from a variety of unique individuals. Its open and innovative approach to course content and development creates a user-driven, self-paced, and interactive online course. Through partnership with the Canvas Network, this course is offered at no cost.

The offer of comprehensive online-training in data management at no cost fills a gap in data management training resources and fosters broader access to biomedical data while laying the groundwork for future discoveries and breakthroughs.
