Succeeding as a System with Canvas

University systems across the country realize the benefit of centralized learning with the #1 LMS in America

Over the past several years, many university systems have initiated intensive vetting procedures to define the best performing LMS for their institution. Time and time again, Canvas has risen above the competition after in-depth research on campus needs is performed. It is determined that Canvas meets or surpasses campus requirements for a well-rounded, forward-thinking learning management system. Check out these examples:

California Community Colleges:

“The selection of Instructure’s Canvas as the CCMS was nearly unanimous among the OEI CCMS Committee charged with selecting a CCMS, including overwhelming support from student participants. ‘Both the students and faculty members involved believed that students would be most successful using the Canvas system,’ said OEI Statewide Program Director Steve Klein. ‘The student success element was a consistent focus throughout.’ The choice was based on the OEI philosophy of doing what is best for the students of California.

Many of the 113 California Community Colleges have committed to adopting Canvas as their course management system with most expected to adopt over the coming years. ‘We have laid the groundwork for an amazing implementation that will profoundly enhance not only online classes but every course taught in the California Community Colleges,’ exclaimed Joe Perret, CCMS Committee Chair and Pierce College faculty member.”

State of Wyoming K:20

“Enrolled Act 57 was passed during the 2017 legislative session requiring the WDE to provide districts with a Learning Management System (LMS). The WDE in collaboration with the University of Wyoming and five community colleges selected Canvas as the single LMS to create a unified K-20 experience for students and teachers across the state. Utilizing this statewide system, allows students and teachers to take advantage of the following benefits:

Consistent support of in-class and online instructional practices through the use of Canvas in conjunction with Google and other classroom technology.

Provide additional educational opportunities to equip our students fo success at all levels and to prepare for future educational endeavors.”

State of New Hampshire:

“The New Hampshire Department of Education launched iLearnNH, a statewide Learning Management System (LMS) that is open at no cost to New Hampshire schools. iLearnNH is built on Canvas, an LMS that gives teachers the ability to build and manage courses based on their local curriculum, manage and grade assignments, and communicate with students.”

“Teachers can harness digital tools to improve in-class, as well as remote, instruction,” said Education Commissioner Frank Edelblut. “It will allow schools to be nimble should they face disruptions to education like COVID-19.”

“iLearnNH is an initiative of the NH Department of Education, in conjunction with the University System of New Hampshire, whose mission is to connect teachers and students by providing a standard Learning Management System (LMS) platform for NH K-12 schools.

Public, private, and charter K-12 schools in New Hampshire that opt into the program receive licensing for access to the Canvas LMS by Instructure, the Kaltura platform for media hosting, and Zoom video conferencing. In addition, schools will receive support resources in the initial setup and configuration of the tools, training for teachers and technical staff, and ongoing support for integrating the capabilities and best practices of each platform.

Every School Administrative Unit (SAU) or school runs and manages their own instances of the Canvas LMS. All of the instances under iLearnNH are integrated within a New Hampshire consortium that will enable access and sharing between different SAUs or schools.”

The benefits of system-wide adoptions are many. A system-wide adoption solves for increased collaboration, provides financial incentive for smaller campuses, and provides centralized learning that benefits both instructors and students. Read why Canvas LMS is the choice of systems across America looking to solve challenges and streamline solutions:

Opportunity for Collaboration Between Colleges in any Teaching  Environment

UC Irvine article, “What is Canvas,” states, “Canvas is built to support a wide variety of pedagogical use cases, providing the tools instructors need to teach in traditional classes, flipped and hybrid environments, and classes that are fully online. It integrates with other systems, including both existing campus systems and 3rd-party tools. Many others are already using or piloting Canvas including UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UC Office of the President, UC Irvine Health Education, University of Central Florida, University of Pennsylvania, University of Washington, and Harvard University

Financial Incentive for Institutions who opt in

Instructure’s Wyoming K-20 Case Study reports, “In alignment with state values, the WDE has a mandate to create a plan around digital learning and equity. Starting in 2016, the team made a statewide effort to understand what districts needed to drive digital learning forward. This vision would end up being instrumental in the state’s pivot to distance learning during the COVID-19 global pandemic.

The search for Canvas LMS began to provide a consistent, familiar, digital classroom and ease the burden on both students and teachers. During their investigation into district needs, the team found that part of the reason courses weren’t being shared at the state level was because they didn’t have a common LMS. Without one, smaller districts were forced to pay high costs per student to ensure every student could have equitable access to high-quality content and digital learning tools. Because of the state’s rural nature, an LMS may be desired but not economically viable for all districts. With the state’s support behind a common LMS, these issues would be resolved.

The University of Wyoming was an early adopter of Canvas LMS and saw high rates of student achievement, making Canvas LMS the obvious choice for the Wyoming Department of Education in its search.”

Centralized Learning Management Supports Both Instructors and Students

CSU Channel Islands, CI Learn reports, “In Spring 2016, three LMSs were evaluated as part of a CSU system-wide evaluation. Canvas outperformed the other two systems. Members of the T&LI team at CI were part of the evaluation team and believe that Canvas will be a good fit for CI. For students, Canvas offers an enhanced, contemporary learning experience. For faculty, Canvas offers superior performance in terms of ease-of-use, analytics, grading, course migrations and openness.”
