[Yarra Valley Grammar] Using ChatGPT for Quiz Creation
Good afternoon, everyone. I'm going to show you today how to transform the way you create Canvas quizzes with just a few simple instructions. We're going to explore how ChatGPT can become your learning assistant to help you create dynamic quizzes that capture your students' interest. You'll see how easy it is to use ChatGPT to create multiple choice, select all that apply, and true or false questions. By the end, you'll be able to make your own Canvas quiz in just five to twelve minutes. And I'll show you, how to do that in a live presentation if my Internet holds up.
So I've done this before with, our staff at at school, and, they're probably your harshest critics because they know you so well. And, they were really wrapped. They they really were, really happy to see that they could use this. So let's just see how we go. I've been working at at Yarra Valley Grammar now for twelve years.
Prior to that, I was at, Marta Christie Girls College for a little while, but also at Xavier College, a Jesuit school in Melbourne for over twenty five years. Yarra Valley Gram is also in Melbourne. It's a mid sized school of nearly, nineteen hundred students. All students in the school have access to their own device as do our teachers. We have high expectations in terms of behavior and academic standards.
Ten years ago, we created a system to base all of our assessments and feedback to students and parents through Canvas exclusively. We were the first school in Australia to introduce genuine continuous reporting using Canvas. Now over the years, I've come to believe that these are the components that promote academic success with digital learning. You'll notice that most of these are about teaching and learning rather than technology. Artificial intelligence is now influencing all of these While we are experiencing, what we all are experiencing with ChatGPT and other AI right now is not a future possibility.
It's the present reality for for anyone who has access to a device regardless of what country you're in. When you combine it with the structure that Canvas provides, then you are building an ecosystem that can help you scaffold learning for your students and then help you better understand their needs. Now you're going to have access to this presentation. I'll give you a QR code. All the resources here are available to you.
I'm not going to click into this link if one of these is missing. That's not really the purpose of this. But this here is really about showing that when you've got all these components of excellence, when you've got them, aligned for digital learning, then there's no doubt positive change will happen. If you've got a couple missing, then then you can go to that link and see what what's the, net effect of that is. So today's session, we'll use these materials, and you'll have access to the these ones, as I said, to download those resources as well.
I want to spend a little bit of time first to talk about why Canvas quizzes are important for learning. Hopefully, you're all using Canvas quizzes, but if you're not, it really doesn't matter. I'm I'm not assuming that you're an expert in quizzes at all. Authentic assessment should be a mix of informal, formative assessment, and more formal, summative assessment. Canvas quizzes can be used in both ways.
I use it for for the subjects I teach. I will give them a formal assessment in quizzes at the end of our, semester subject, but I use Canvas quizzes on a weekly basis for short, sharp signposts. The quizzes created with ChatGPT, fall into the category of informal testing. They're informal check points, weekly routine in a subject and should only take a few minutes for students to do. Here, instantly that going to work? Yes, it is.
Here, instantly, you can see the average student score in the quiz summary, the highest and the lowest score, as well as the average time taken by a student to complete this formal test. This is all available in the quiz breakdown part of Canvas. Next, you can see the percentage of correct and incorrect answers for individual questions. And by clicking on the red text, you can see the analysis of responses for each question of individual students. So that's all available in Canvas, and a lot of teachers don't really, delve into it that much.
But if you go into there, you can see that breakdown. It it's really, really valuable. And the reason it's valuable is because if you're using extend external quizzes from another source, it might be Kahoot or something like that or Socrates or whatever, that item analysis usually is not available in most external quizzes. When external quizzes are used, then those results can't be collated and cannot contribute to a student's overall score in their Canvas assessment. Using Canvas quizzes means that Canvas remains the single source of truth for assessment.
And my belief is that all things, whether it's informal or, formal assessment, should all, really contribute to a student's overall assessment. So the classwork as well as, the work they're doing for formal assessment all contributes to this overall profile of a student. When you're using Canvas quizzes, there's no correction for a teacher. Everything can be automated. Students can be easily assigned extra time based on their needs.
It's another tool or strategy to gauge effectiveness that supplements more formal testing. What I like to do in my class is that I'll give them two attempts. The first attempt will be by themselves as individuals. Once they've had a go by themselves and they can work with a partner after that, and then you take the average of the two, results or the two attempts to give a final mark. Now the reason I do that is because I don't want the students scared that that this is an assessment.
Oh, well, it's it's it's too much pressure. It's this is about a checkpoint for the students to make sure that they understand that, this is designed to help them. And invariably, they start to look forward to these quizzes because they know if they know the work, it's everything's gonna be right. So here's a visual representation of how this is done. I must acknowledge here that this process is not my own process, but has been modified and hopefully improved from doctor Sean Noether, who presented this previously on the topic at, InstructureCon in the States.
What I've added here is to break up into this up into a series of sequence steps, documented steps to help you learn how to precisely do this. First, you need a source document. You need an article or maybe a YouTube transcript. So you need some text. So what you're gonna do is you're gonna grab that text, you're going to put it into a document with a a prompt.
That document can be a a Google Docs document or a Microsoft Word document. You grab that, you copy and paste it. This is all about copying and pasting. Now a lot of your teachers will think, it's too hard. It's too hard.
But but with this, it it's so, sequenced that all your teachers can do this, guaranteed. So you need that source document. The text is added to the bottom of that chat g t p prompt that can be modified. That's pasted into ChatGPT, which then creates a table of questions. You grab that table.
You put it into Excel. Copy and paste it into Excel, you select a CSV format, you save that, you put it into the QTI converter, which is simply a web link, and then that creates the format to then import it straight into Canvas. So really, as I said before, if you can copy and paste, you can do this. All you need to know is the step sequence. Now I've got a document here, which we're going to distribute in about five minutes.
I don't expect you to have a go today, but you're welcome to. But more importantly, you've got a takeaway, whether it's a hard copy or a soft copy, to go away and practice. I guarantee the beauty of this is you can see and troubleshoot any problems that you've got by just seeing what the the prompts are there. So we click select that source document and then copy it into a document with the chat gpt prompt. We're gonna do that in about thirty seconds.
So two important points to remember here. Okay? It's ChatGPT. It's artificial intelligence, so you need to check content for accuracy. ChatGPT will do most of it for you, but as we know, it's like a a learning assistant or an intern. You need to give them work, but then check their work as well.
So that's an important consideration. And I know it was mentioned in the sessions earlier today, but you always need to check for for, accuracy as well as bias because TAPPT, GPT, the large language models have, bias inherently in it because of the reasons of of who's creating it. All good. So here's everything that you need to do in your own time. I guarantee you'll be able to do it if you follow these steps.
In a couple of minutes, you'll see a QR code to the whole presentation that includes these resources. You'll also have hard copies which we're gonna give out, in a a moment. So here, we're gonna use this particular article. It's about cats. I'm personally a dog person, but I've got a cat that I absolutely love as well.
So, so we're gonna use this particular, article, and we're gonna jump out right now and, just have a look at this. I'm just gonna change the mirroring here. So right. Okay. That looks a little okay.
So here we go. Now there's the article just there. Okay? And it's about cats, about supporting and banning cats from roaming around so that they've got to be inside, and there's a rationale between it. So all I'm going to do here is I'm gonna copy everything. Now I could do it that way.
I'm gonna do it cheat's way. I'm gonna click there. I'm gonna go right down the bottom. I'm gonna include the images. Okay.
Go there. I'm gonna hold down my shift key. So we're gonna go to that there. Hold down the shift key, and I'm just simply gonna copy it. K.
Now I'm going to go to my GPT prompt. K. And this, you've got a you'll have a copy of this. You can see it just there. Hopefully, I'll blow it up a little bit more.
I'm going and and the the prompt says, act as a year. I'm gonna change this to year nine, teacher teaching English. And you can change this obviously to the Philippines, but I'll stay in Australia for the moment. There it is there. We don't need to even worry about this.
This is just telling chapter p t what to do. Based on the passage below, again, we simply now just copy that in. Okay. Now I'm gonna go right down the bottom. I don't need the images, so what I'm going to do here is get rid of this little pussycat.
Get rid of that one. Now I've got one more here. Possums. I don't think you have possums in in the Philippines or not. No one likes possums in Australia.
And there it is. So now I'm gonna simply go and I'll just rather than do the people command, I'm just going to go to select all. I'm gonna then copy. I'm gonna put that to the side this time. I'm gonna go to ChatTPT, and here, I'm going to paste that into ChatTPT.
Now I'll get rid of that little image there. I'm gonna press this little button here, and there it is. It's starting to do something. As I scroll down, it starts to instantly create the table for us. So it's creating questions from the text.
That's almost finished. Yeah. I think we're done. And I go here. I choose the file, and there it is, that zip file.
I then say import. It'll queue, and then it will start to run. Okay. It's already it's queued for us, but we're just waiting for it to start. Ping.
It's working beautifully on that hotspot. Here it goes. Once that's finished, it's completed. It's now in quiz format. We go over to quizzes, and from there, we look for cats.
There it is just there, made it all capitals, And we can preview it, and there's our quiz. So you can check this. You'll need to check, for this. This is really easy. This is not rocket science.
If you can copy and paste, you can do this. And you've got all all of the the steps there as well. Now have a look at top things to do in Manila. Okay? I'm just gonna refresh that. I haven't got any volume on it, so don't worry.
I'm gonna go in here. I'm gonna go down to more. That's where the transcript is. Okay? I'm gonna copy the the transcript. We'll get rid of the toggles.
So there's all the text on the transcript. So we're just gonna go down there quickly. And I think I've got all of it. Yep. Go to copy.
Okay. So I've got it all there. Now I'm going to go back to that Word document, and I'm going to be a teacher in the Philippines. Spell Philippines. Right? And, I'm teaching English, and I'm gonna be in year seven this time.
Okay? So we're gonna get rid of all of this, all of our caps, freedom. Come on. Should have created a new one. It's slow. Right.
Get rid of all of that. Paste it in there. It's got it there. This time, select all. Got a copy.
Put it into ChatTPT again. Same thing. Get rid of that there. Pull the trigger. It will start to create it automatically.
And we're nearly there. Right. So there's all of our work. MC stands for multiple choice. We don't grab the heading.
We simply go across that way and copy it. This time, we, then go into a close-up, and we'll go to file new and quickly put it in there. Paste file save as. Okay. So that's just got that there.
I know. Again, that forty is there, so let's get rid of that. File save as, and we go save. CSV. There you go.
And we're gonna call it Manila. Save. Close that. Go back to chat to converter. If it works, happy days.
If it doesn't, I'll stop there. Perform conversion. Yep. All good. So this time, we go there.
Go back into here, settings, and import course content. Select one. So hopefully, by doing it again, you you'll see how it does it. Bring it in. The queues, and it should take ten seconds to do.
