Our latest research, The Lifelong Learning Report, Trends and Insights from K-12 to Career, proves that leading this change is not simply about keeping up—it’s about unlocking new opportunities for learners and educators to thrive together. Explore the four key themes driving this transformation and see how they’re shaping the future of lifelong learning and success.
1) The LMS is the Cornerstone of Learning
The learning management system (LMS) has become the bedrock of education across classrooms, campuses, and corporations. It’s where teaching and technology merge, providing a centralized platform to consolidate resources, foster collaborative engagement, and support personalized learning journeys.
According to respondents, an LMS is the most widely used technology solution to support teaching and learning, with 91% of teachers and 84% of students in K-12 using one, and 95% of teachers and 90% of students in HE using one. This rings true in Professional Learning as well, with 79% of respondents using one.
For educators, an LMS streamlines tasks like grading and managing assessments, freeing up more time to deliver timely feedback and form meaningful connections.
For learners, it’s a gateway to accessible learning that can adapt to their individual needs, whether they’re mastering K-12 standards, preparing for college, or engaging in professional development to advance their careers.
But the LMS is more than a tool—it has become a bridge across educational stages. From grade school to corporate training programs, a consistent and intuitive LMS experience can make transitions smoother and keep learners engaged. As the foundational technology for teaching and learning, institutions must prioritize enhancing how educators and learners interact with these platforms to unlock their full potential.
2) Navigating AI’s Role in Learning Starts with Training
AI is no longer a futuristic concept. It’s here, and it’s changing how we teach, learn, and work. AI has the power to transform education by automating administrative tasks, enabling adaptive learning experiences, and even helping educators assess student needs in real-time. However, this potential does not come without its set of challenges that raise concerns.
As institutions continue to explore the potential of AI, prioritizing the development of comprehensive policies and training is important for implementing the responsible, effective integration of these technologies in support of lifelong learning.
In both K-12 and Higher Education, ethical considerations (83% in K-12, 65% in Higher Ed) and fears of student dependency (82% in K-12, 65% in Higher Ed) top the list of challenges.
In contrast, the Professional Learning sector shows slower adoption, with only half of respondents reporting any use of AI. Among those who have adopted it, data privacy emerges as the primary concern (45%). This highlights a gap in readiness and confidence in leveraging AI across different learning environments.
In K-12 settings, concerns over data privacy and the accuracy of AI-generated content loom large. In higher education, debates around plagiarism and the ethical use of AI tools have ensued.
Meanwhile, professional learning environments are experimenting with ways to integrate AI effectively into training programs.
By investing in policies and training, educators across all educational stages can harness AI to enhance teaching and learning while addressing concerns around safety, equity, and efficacy. The question isn’t whether AI will shape the future of education, it’s how we ensure it does so responsibly and inclusively.
3) Strengthening the Workforce Calls for Industry Partnerships
In today’s fast-paced job market, the connection between education and industry has never been more critical. From internships to real-world projects, partnerships with industry leaders give learners the skills and experiences they need to thrive in their careers. These collaborations also ensure that what’s taught in classrooms aligns with the evolving demands of the workforce.
In K-12, an overwhelming 95% of respondents indicated that collaborating with external organizations is essential for providing real-world learning experiences to students.
In Higher Education, 83% of respondents agreed that offering skills-based learning alongside academic education is critical for preparing students for the workforce.
Similarly, in Professional Learning, 86% of respondents emphasized the importance of providing ongoing learning opportunities that extend beyond immediate job requirements.
Industry partnerships open the door to career exploration and hands-on learning for K-12 and higher education students, providing learners with the soft and hard skills to transition smoothly into the workforce. For professional learners, partnerships are vital for keeping training programs relevant and aligned with emerging trends. At every level, these collaborations prepare learners for the challenges of tomorrow while fostering adaptability and resilience.
Being employable is not just about mastering technical skills—it’s also about building soft skills like communication, teamwork, and critical thinking. By forming industry partnerships, institutions can create programs that develop well-rounded professionals ready to contribute meaningfully in the workplace.
4) Empowering Lifelong Learning is a Must
The need for lifelong learning has never been greater. Whether a high school student is earning college credits, earning a digital credential as a working professional, or exploring a new career path, the drive to upskill and reskill is reshaping the education landscape. Lifelong learning is not a trend; it’s a mindset empowering individuals to adapt, innovate, and grow—qualities that are essential in today’s evolving workforce.
Respondents across stages identified both common priorities and unique needs for meeting future challenges:
In K-12, increased funding (72%) and the integration of technology and digital tools (71%) were determined as critical to keep pace with future needs.
In Higher Education, respondents emphasized flexibility, with 79% highlighting the need for institutions to offer more adaptable course and program delivery.
In Professional Learning, 80% of respondents pointed to integrating new technologies and digital tools as the key to advancing professional development and preparing for future demands.
Educational institutions play a crucial role in fostering a culture of learning by creating opportunities that blend skill development into academic learning. To do so, there must be more focus on making education flexible, accessible, and aligned with real-world needs.
